Review: Knowing

March 24th, 2009  |  Published in Movies and More

Have you ever wished you knew something in advance? You know, like the winning lottery numbers on a $178 million lottery drawing, or the winning horse at the Belmont? If you saw Knowing this past weekend, you will now know that sometimes knowing too much is not such a good thing.

Knowing stars, Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, and Chandler Canterbury, in a somewhat psychological thriller a la M. Night Shyamalan. He didn’t have anything to do with this movie, but it rang close to his home.

While I really enjoyed the visual effects of the film, at 2 hours and 2 minutes long, it needed a bit more, but with all the dialog, I just don’t see how they could have added it.

Cage is his usual self in this movie, curious, intrigued, and even downright annoying at times, but it serves a purpose. Without giving away too much, just wait until the first of a few disasters; I was so awestruck at the effects I couldn’t contain myself.

Don’t get me wrong, the movie wasn’t that great, but it kept me entertained and even startled at times. I was surprised and disappointed with the direction of the plot near the end of the movie, but the finale did make up for it, at least story wise.

The movie might be worth it, but in my opinion, if I had to do it over again, I would wait until the DVD release. If you like thrillers or Nicolas Cage, go see it.
